Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Kundizeza has won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing, receiving £10,000 for his short story, “The Blue Fighter.”
Kundizeza, who is based in Harare and is the associate editor of African Writer Magazine, was selected as the winner from a shortlist of five writers from countries including Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt. The finalists were chosen from more than 400 entries submitted from across the African continent.
Now in its 26th year, the Caine Prize is one of the leading literary awards recognising African writers and writing.
Kundizeza won for “The Blue Fighter,” a story about a once prosperous family forced to adapt to life in a new township because of the fledgling dream of a man who is passionate about fish and their aquariums. The story explores dying dreams and passions, patience, changing circumstances and family life.

The competition included writers with diverse literary and academic backgrounds, including Ph.D. candidates. Kundizeza, however, brought a growing record of literary recognition to the competition.
He was a finalist in the 2018 Africa Book Club Short Story Competition and an alumnus of the 2025 Library of Africa and the African Diaspora (LOATAD) Black Atlantic Residency. His debut novel manuscript, Freelance, was also recognised at the 2024 Island Prize for Debut African Fiction.
South African writer Siphiwo Mahala, a multi-award-winning author, was among the five judges on this year’s Caine Prize panel.
For Kundizeza, the award represents recognition for a writing career developed alongside the demands of work and family life.
“Winning the Caine Prize means a great deal to me. I’ve been writing for several years, often without knowing where the work would take me, just fitting it around everything else in my life,” Kundizeza said.
“To have a story drawn from my own experiences recognised at this level makes all those everyday compromises feel worthwhile. Most of all, it gives me a little more belief that I can keep making room for this life as a writer,” he said.
